DESCRIPTION – The Poway Unified School District is located in northern San Diego County.  Encompassing an area of 100 square miles, district schools are situated in suburban San Diego and throughout the rural city of Poway.

POPULATION - The population of the area is approximately 167,900 with a Poway Unified School District population of approximately 33,000 students
K-12. The student enrollment of Rancho Bernardo High School comes from the communities of Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho de los Penasquitos,
Sabre Springs and Carmel Mountain Ranch.

School

DESCRIPTION - A comprehensive four year secondary school.

ENROLLMENT - Total of 2,564 students with a senior class of 692.

FACILITIES -Rancho Bernardo High School is designed with 84 standard 9-12 classrooms, 30 labs, 9 classrooms for special education students, library, multi-level gymnasium with seating for 1800, a 14-lane pool, shower/locker facilities, multi-purpose room, administration building, central serving and food preparation kitchen, stadium with all-weather track and playing field, and a 370-seat performing arts theater complex which includes dressing, rehearsal, band and choral instruction rooms. Total size: 224,781 square feet.

FACULTY -The 2009-2010 faculty includes 102 teachers, 11 special education teachers, 4 administrators, 5 counselors, 1 librarian, 1 school psychologist and
1 speech therapist.

College & University Admissions

GRADE POINT AVERAGE AND CLASS RANK - The computation is based on a marking system of A, B, C, D, F with point values of 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, with the exception of Advanced Placement courses which are assigned point values of 5, 4, 3, 1, 0. Physical Education, Work Experience, and School Service grades are excluded from the computation. The college recommending mark is C or above. The passing grade is D.

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS -Typically over 93 percent of the graduates in the Rancho Bernardo High School go on to higher education. Enrollment in four-year colleges and universities is 55 percent, and slightly more than 38 percent enroll in two-year colleges. Rancho Bernardo High School graduates have been accepted to and attend most major colleges and universities in the United States, including:

Academic Information

CURRICULUM - The curriculum is divided into two major programs: University-bound, and high school graduation.

UNIVERSITY-BOUND STUDENTS (UC and CSU) - In general, these students take four years of higher math (algebra-calculus), two to four years of science, four years of English, two to five years of foreign language, and three years of social science and history, plus additional and required electives.

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION - These students take required graduation courses and are encouraged to take electives appropriate to their vocational interests.

ELECTIVES COURSES - Courses are offered in arts/visual & technical, speech, business, computers, drama, home economics, music (instrumental and choral), industrial/technology, and school service (teacher assistants, office assistants and academic tutors).

OTHER PROGRAMS-HONORS (H) - Courses are offered in English, Math, Science, and World Language.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) - Courses are offered in English (2 years), chemistry, biology, physics (2 years), environmental science, calculus (2 years), statistics, European history, World history, U.S. history, government/economics, French, German, Spanish, studio art and art history. Grade points assigned 5, 4, 3, 1, 0.

TRANSFER STUDENTS - RBHS will award 5-point scale credit only for those classes for which it is award in the Poway Unified School District. Honors and AP classes taken in another district but not offered in PUSD will receive 4 grade points, not 5. (3.7.1)

ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION (AVID) - A program designed to help under-represented students who have average to high test scores on standardized tests prepare for college.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER (ELL) - Courses for students needing to learn to speak, read and write English are offered through the ELL program.

SPECIAL EDUCATION - Special instruction is provided for students with more severe learning problems by participating in either a special day class or the resource specialist program and other programs as needed.

STUDENT ASSISTANCE SERVICES (SAS) - A program involving teachers, counselors, administrators and the school psychologist to assist troubled students through group counseling, peer counseling, etc.

REGIONAL OCCUPATIONAL PROGRAM (ROP) - Vocational training classes are offered through ROP in a number of areas including business, fashion merchandising, screen printing, computer graphic arts, digital media production and biomedical technology.

PALOMAR CLASSES - Palomar Community College classes are available for Rancho Bernardo students. Juniors and seniors may take advantage of very advanced and special interest courses offered by the community college.  Administration approval is mandatory.

Graduation Requirements

No changes in graduation requirements are anticipated at this time. Current requirements are:

Credits:
  230 credits are required for graduation with 5 credits earned for each course completed with a grade of "D" or better.

Computer Literacy:
  All students must take one computer class or pass a computer literacy test in order to receive a diploma.

Competency:
  The Class of 2006 and beyond will be required to pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) in order to receive a high school diploma.

Academic Recognition


ADVANCED PLACEMENT RESULTS - 2009:  81.9 percent of 781 students taking 1,583 AP exams received a grade of 3 or higher.

SAT - CEEB #052536. During the 2007-2008 school year, RBHS students obtained the following mean scores on the SAT tests:
  • Critical Reading: 539
  • Math: 578
  • Writing: 545

ACT - Students in the 2009 graduation class obtained the following scores on the ACT tests during their 10th, 11th, or 12th grade years:
  • English: 24.5
  • Math: 26.3
  • Reading: 25.1
  • Science Reasoning: 23.3
  • Composite: 24.9

CURRENT API (Academic Performance Index) - 841

CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM (CAHSEE) - Typically over 94 percent of RBHS students pass on the first administration.

NATIONAL MERIT - Rancho Bernardo has 8 National Merit Semi Finalists for the 2009-10 school year.

ACADEMIC DECATHLON AND NORTH COUNTY ACADEMIC LEAGUE - Rancho Bernardo students participate in the San Diego County competition.
